In October 2018, I revisited Bucovaca, a small village located in central Bosnia. It had been 25 years since my last visit to the village, where I had served as a medical officer for the Dutch army from September 1993 until April 1994, as part of the UNPROFOR peacekeeping mission during the Bosnian Civil War. During my return, I had the opportunity to reflect on my experiences and to observe the ways in which the village had changed over the years. A photo essay capturing my journey and experiences was subsequently published in CheckPoint in 2019.
